This map of Africa is a re-issue of a rare 1623 map by Jodocus Hondius, but without the decorative borders. Tooley notes that “the Cape is more rounded, the shape of Madagascar altered and the Cuama is named.” The interior of the continent is populated by images of exotic African animals, including camel, elephant, zebra, ostrich, ape, and a number of big cats, while the seas contain a number of ships, flying fish and sea monsters, with Neptune and a mermaid showb in the lower left. This example with the imprint of Jansson, which was added in 1641.
