DESCRIPTION:

In its first state (1822), this large-scale chart was an early example of the work of the Surveying Service of the Admiralty’s Hydrographic office. It was based on surveys conducted by Lts. Vidal and Mudge on board H.M ship Leven from 1819 to 1821. That it was the best map or chart of these islands then in existence is shown by the fact that when a copy was gifted to the authorities in Lisbon they were so impressed that they gave the British Admiralty permission to survey their African possessions. This example has been corrected and updated to September 1864. There are notations about currents, winds, the availability of fresh water, and so forth.
