AUTHOR:

GILMER, J. F.

TITLE:

Map of the Vicinity of Richmond and Part of the Peninsula From Surveys Made by Order of Maj. Gen. J.F. Gilmer Chief Engineer CSA

CONDITION:

Black and white lithograph, 27” x 16-1/2”.

DATE:

[Richmond? 1864]

DESCRIPTION:

Very rare Confederate map of the environs of Richmond, prepared during the months that Gilmer served as head of the Confederate Engineering Department (June 1864 to April 1865). Extremely detailed, showing major and minor roads, and identifying hundreds of properties by the owner’s name

Copies located at Virginia Historical; Library of Virginia; Hargett Library, University of Georgia; and the United States Military Academy. The USMA copy of the map bears the following interesting notation (in ink):

“This was taken from a package of C. A. documents at the Hdqrs [of the] Army of N. Va. [at Appomattox] April 8, 1865 … Captured
by Sheridan’s Corps….”

Not at the Library of Congress. This map is not to be confused with Campbell’s large-scale map of the same name (Stephenson 624-626), although it appears to be a reduced version of that map, perhaps printed in the field.
