AUTHOR:

RANKIN, JOHN C., JR.

TITLE:

Map of the City of Newport News. Virginia

CONDITION:

Black and white lithographed folding map that measures 49” x 36”. One split, a bit of loss at folds, and some staining in the lower left part of the map, that only slightly intrudes into the area of the town itself. Other minor flaws confined to the very wide margins. Some manuscript additions.

DATE:

New York [circa 1895]

DESCRIPTION:

This rare, separately-issued promotional real estate map must be the earliest large-scale, detailed map for Newport News. Drawn on a scale of 389½ ft. to the inch, it includes the area between Slater’s Creek and James River. For the most part, the city is confined to the area bounded by Wickam Avenue and Fiftieth St. Every city block (to 521) and city lot are numbered. Several lots in block 95, near the corner of Twenty Seventh St. and Washington Avenue are colored in red pencil.

The map’s immense size indicates that it was separately-issued as opposed to having been included in some sort of promotional pamphlet. Little is known about John C. Rankin, whose premises were at 34 Cortlandt St., New York. He was in business by 1888 and died in 1903. Rankin is not mentioned by Peters,
America on Stone. This map of Newport News is not in Rumsey who does list another by Rankin (Lines and Metallic Circuit Connections American Telephone and Telegraph Co., 1891 (n.5564.001)). In 1901 Philip Lee Phillips in 1901 listed no maps of Newport News in the collection of the Library of Congress.
