DESCRIPTION:

An excellent example of the separately issued New Map of the City of New York (1827). This map was originally published to be inserted in James Hardie’s Description of the City of New York, where it appears uncolored. This version in color was issued in its own binder also in 1827. A later edition was separately published by J. Landon in 1831.

The map was published at a time when New York City was rapidly expanding. It shows the Lower East Side landfill, commercial and real estate developments in what was then the northern part of the city (indicated by shading), and the construction of docks, piers and ferry crossings.

At the base there are views of City Hall and the Merchants’ Exchange at 55 Wall Street which had just been completed as this map went to press. The Exchange would be destroyed by the great fire in 1835.
