DESCRIPTION:

This rare, magnificently ornamented, separately-issued map celebrates the Austrian army’s 1702 siege of Mantua in the central Po Valley, an event which marked the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession. At center, to the right of the Ro River, the Austrians are shown laying siege to the estates of the Gonzagas, the powerful family who ruled the city-state of Mantua for nearly four centuries, from 1328 to 1708. An elaborate key at upper right locates other engagements by number. At lower right is a dedication to Charles II of Austria, Holy Roman Emperor. In addition to the Duchy of Mantua, the map includes the neighboring cities of Modena, Cremora and Parma. The Bodenehr family of engravers worked in Augsberg and are known mainly for their pocket atlases. They produced only a small number of maps in folio format. Tooley’s Dictionary notes, “the editors have been unable to establish reliably the relationships between mapmakers of this name, or distinguish between the work of Gabriel the elder and younger.”
