DESCRIPTION:

A large-scale decorative map of the French Province of Lyonnais, with its capital at Lyon, on the upper Loire and Rhone rivers. Originally published on two sheets, which with this copy were joined by the publisher to form of spectacular wall map. In the two-sheet version, most copies would have been colored in outline, as opposed to the full color wash on this example. The lower right portion of the map is taken up by an elaborate cartouche with the title printed on the back of a lion skin, symbolizing the city of Lyon. Below are personifications of the rivers Rhone and Saone, which converge at Lyon. Above are personifications of gods, including Mercury, and cherubs. Jean Baptiste Nolin (1657-1708) was one of the most important French mapmakers of his generation. He was appointed Geographer to Louis XlV in 1701. He was most famous as the French publisher for V. M. Coronelli, for whom he engraved a set of 43-inch celestial globe gores in 1688.
