Colton’s Railroad and Township Map of Western States Compiled from U. S. Surveys. New York

CONDITION:

Full original color, 34 1/2 x 42 ¼”. Ex-library, removed from cloth covers, flattened. One small area of loss, else fine condition.

1852

DESCRIPTION:

First edition of a very decorative and exceedingly detailed map of the American Midwest. Modelski notes that Colton’s Railroad and Township map “surpassed in quality and quantity other maps of the nineteenth century”. Large portions of Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan are still devoid of settlement, while Minnesota remains almost completely undeveloped.

The map is surrounded by a large ornamental border, with circular vignettes in each corner. The lower two contain views of St. Louis and Louisville; the upper two depictions of a buffalo and an antelope. A third town view, of Cincinnati, is inset into the title.

The Library of Congress has editions of 1852, 1853, 1855 and 1857. The 1853 edition is the Millard Fillmore copy.
