DESCRIPTION:

A rare California Gold Rush map. Although the Gold Fields are not identified, the map was designed to show the “routes overland and by the Isthmus to California and Oregon.”

Atwood had prepared an important map of the Gold Rush for Colton in 1849 (
Gold Rush, 70). Rumsey considered this 1851 map to be “very well done and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name.” Wheat does not list the map, but Gold Rush, 258, seems to be an 1854 variant published by Ensign, Bridgeman and Fanning.

The map’s title notes that it also shows the “new Boundaries of California, Utah & New Mexico,” which had been created some months earlier by the Compromise of September 1850. The new (and present) boundary of Texas, created by the same act, is also shown. Detail for the American West is excellent and generally up-to-date.
