DESCRIPTION:

This is the fine French edition of the most important map of the United States published in England during the Napoleonic Period.

The English edition was the work of Aaron Arrowsmith, who is generally recognized as the world’s leading geographer of the time. He is particularly famous for his series of great multi-sheet wall maps of various parts of the world, including his map of the United States, which was one of the most significant.

Stevens & Tree list nine issues of the original English edition, from 1796 to 1819. There is no 1812 English issue, but there is an 1808. Tardieu probably used the latter as his pattern, but undated it to account for more recent information.

The French edition is actually more finely engraved than the English, and has one major innovation: the famous Ellicott plan of Washington D. C. –the “Official” plan of the city- has been added as a large inset above the title cartouche.
