TITLE:

Map of Mining Lands at Newbury near Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts

CONDITION:

17 3/4” x 22 1/2”. Uncolored pocket map in original binding. Very crisp and clean. An excellent example.

DATE:

1875

DESCRIPTION:

An unusual pocket map of the western part of Newbury at Cape Ann, which shows Newburyport, the mouth of the Merrimac River, and the northern portion of Plum Island. Drawn on a scale of 125 rods to the inch, the “Boston and Maine” and “Eastern” railroads are shown, as well as a number of stations (one labeled “Mining Station”), dozens of landowners, churches, important buildings and businesses (including a Snuff Factory). The topographical detail is beautifully rendered, and the whole is very finely engraved. While styling itself as a mining map, it is more likely a form of real estate promotion by N. Little, the publisher, whose name appears, with other members of the Little family, quite frequently among the land owners indentified on the map. Very few maps of mining areas also show the Atlantic Ocean.
