DESCRIPTION:

John Chace Jr.’s Map of Suffolk County, Long Island was the first county map of Long Island ever published, preceding Henry Francis Walling’s map of Kings and Queen’s County by a year. This monumental wall map covers the eastern part of the island from Huntington to Montauk, and includes insets of such fashionable towns as Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, and Amagansett, along with numerous other Long Island towns. For some towns, business directions are also included and the names of homeowners and location of the houses are on every inset. The map is divided into two sections: the upper includes the central part of the island and the lower, the eastern-most section.

In addition to the inset maps, Chace has added tables of miscellaneous information such as the “agricultural statistics” and the “stations on the Long Island Railroad.” By 1858, the railroad had extended all the way to Greenport, and the single decorative feature on the map is a railroad engine on the track between Yaphank and Medford.

This busy map also has vignettes of municipal buildings and private homes along its sides. One would expect these to be grand homesteads, but one is a modest farmhouse in the town of Good Ground, Long Island. Chace’s map of Suffolk County is an attractive work that provides a great deal of information on life on Long Island in the years right before the Civil War.
