DATE:

Washington, 1855

DESCRIPTION:

This mammoth, extremely detailed chart of Long Island Sound consists of three individually titled, separately-issued charts, each measuring approximately 24-3/4” x 34-1/8“, but designed so that they could be joined to form one continuous 24-3/4” x 102-1/4” chart of the Sound and its coasts. The individual charts are devoted to the western, middle, and eastern parts of the Sound respectively. The first two are first states (editions), published in 1855; the third is a second state, also dated 1855. It is very uncommon to find all three charts together in this format.

Undoubtedly the most accurate representation of the Sound and its coasts published up to its time, the combined charts extend from Naragansett Bay in the east to Throgs Neck in the west, with a large inset of New York City in the upper left corner. The entire coast of Connecticut, the north shore of Long Island, Block Island and Gardiners Island are shown on a scale of 4 inches equals 5 miles. Montauk Point and the South Shore of Long Island are laid down as far west as Amagansett. The surface is crowded with numerous useful tables, sailing directions, and profile views.
