DESCRIPTION:

This scarce chart shows the Carolina coast from Cape Fear to the Edisto River, contemporary with the American Revolution. It was published in Le Rouge’s Pilote Americain Septentrional, 1778-1779, which consisted mostly of French editions of earlier British maps by Thomas Jefferys and others. This chart is an original production, never published in England, but based upon an English survey conducted in 1770 by Nathaniel Pocock. Le Rouge was a military engineer and cartographer to Louis XVI. The chart has depth soundings and notations throughout, and there are seven coastal profiles in the upper-left corner, including one of the entrance to Charleston Harbor. It is handsomely ornamented by a small rococo cartouche, a sailing ship, and a compass rose.
