DESCRIPTION:
A beautiful chart in full original hand color of Florida's gulf coast from Pensacola to Cape Florida, including the western part of Cuba. Part of the Yucatan Peninsula is shown at lower right, while three insets depict Matanzas Bay, Havana Harbor and Hondo Bay. The chart is oriented with north to the left and nearly all the names are Spanish, suggesting the use of Spanish sources. An elaborate cartouche is flanked by Neptune, god of the sea, and one of the wind gods. Van Keulen’s sea atlas, the Zee-Fakkel, was an enormous success, with text and charts that were far superior to anything else on the European market. The fourth part was devoted to the North American and West Indian coasts, and included some of the most accurate and detailed charts of those regions to date. Koeman notes that “the Van Keulen era in which the publication of charts of waters outside Europe was first realized was of paramount importance in the development of marine cartography in general.”
