DATE:

[1860?]

DESCRIPTION:

Scarce. This is a fine ante-bellum map of Mississippi, with excellent topographical detail and locating roads, towns, forts and counties. Most of the state was well-settled by 1853, with a well-developed road system and a large number of small towns (many since deserted). The exception is the Delta -the region between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers- which still has few towns and roads.

David Rumsey says that the
Hand-Atlas was “Meyer’s grandest production, a real tour de force that has fifty maps of the Americas … the finest German atlas of the mid 19th century.” Included is a suite of maps of American states derived from those in Tanner’s and Mitchell’s editions of the Universal Atlas. These German versions “are beautifully done and in some cases superior to the American originals.” Rumsey locates an edition of the Hand-Atlas dated 1860.
