DATE:

Bologna, 1642

DESCRIPTION:

A rare, early example of a thematic world map. Cavazza uses the central portion of C.J. Visscher’s 1639 planisphere as a base map. This is surrounded an Italianate decorative frame with two side supports. These curved brackets were intended to be cut out and mounted with pins on the map, thereby making an instrument capable of determining which areas of the world might be in sunlight or darkness at any given time. There are explanatory diagrams and text in the lower corners. The map appeared in Battista Riccoli’s Geographica Crucis, Bologna, 1643, a treatise on chart construction.
