DESCRIPTION:

Shirley notes that for “many years this map was mistaken for the world map by John Speed because of similarities in the title and in the configuration.” Walton’s map, while clearly based on Speed, is slightly smaller, has a different outer border, and with Speed’s marginal depictions of the four elements is replaced by the four seasons. The map was originally separately-published with Walton’s name, address, and the date 1656 beneath the title. This is the third state, with all references to Walton erased, which was added to Petau’s History in its third (1659) edition.

Robert Walton (1618-1688) was a prominent London print and map seller, publishing works by Wenceslas Hollar and others. His former apprentice, Christopher Browne, acquired his business on Walton’s death.
