DESCRIPTION:

Vrient’s map is a close copy of Petrus Plancius’s landmark world map which appeared in 1594. In addition to their significant geographical advances, particularly in the East Indies and the Arctic, the Plancius and Vrients maps illlustrate the new style of decoration that was to fill in blank areas surrounding the double hemispheres. They established a pattern of cartographic decoration that remained in style for over a century. The four corners were embellished with allegorical representations of the continents. Shirley thought more highly of the borders on Vrients’ map, writing that they had “even greater stylistic effect” than those on the map of Plancius.

The depiction of the East Indies is greatly improved over earlier maps and is the most accurate of the period. Japan is given a more precise shape and is based on the manuscripts of Portuguese cartographer Luis Teixeira. In the Arctic, there is evidence that use was made of the three voyages of Willem Barents (1594-97). The Northwest Passage is clearly delineated. The
Orbis Terrae is one of the most decorative and advanced world maps of the sixteenth century, and this fully colored Vrients is one of the most attractive examples.
