DESCRIPTION:

This map of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands was normally included as a folding plate in C. G. A. Oldendorp’s Geschichte der Mission der Evangelischen Bruder auf den Caralbishchen Insulem, published in Germany in 1777. But this example shows no sign of ever having been folded, has deckled edges, and must have been sold separately. The map is scarce and seldom offered for sale alone. Oldendorp’s work was the first published devoted to the history, natural resources and social conditions in the Virgin Islands, then the Danish West Indies. It describes the establishment of the Moravian missions in the islands, and is highly important for his account of slave life and the Creole language. Oldendorp was a missionary who spent the years 1767-69 in the islands. An English language edition was published in 1987. The map shows important topographical features, quarters, and plantations. Plantations with a sugar mill are indicated by a special symbol, which is identified below the title.
