DESCRIPTION:

A scarce and significant atlas of the American Civil War, compiled to accompany the Comte de Paris’ Historie de la Guerre Civile en Amerique (7 vols.) 1874-90. Heir apparent to the French throne, the Comte de Paris (1838-94) and his brothers accompanied their uncle, the prince de Joinville to the United States in 1861. The brothers were attached to the staff of General Mc Clellan, commanding the “Army of the Potomac”, and participated in the Peninsular Campaign. When difficulties arose between France and the United States with regard to affairs in Mexico, the brothers returned to Europe. The atlas was originally published in six parts in three volumes, 1874?-1883. This is a complete set, consisting of 30 maps, with the original wrappers bound in for parts 3-4 (1875), 5-6 (1883), and the general wrapper (1883.) Sets with the original wrappers almost never appear on the market. Like the Library of Congress copy, our set lacks the wrapper for parts 1-2 (1874?). The maps are reduced from important original examples separately-published by the U.S. War Department, and cover most of the important engagements of the war. They include Bull Run, Charleston, Corinth (Shiloh), Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Georgia coast, Nashville, New Orleans, Vicksburg, the Shenandoah Valley, Washington, and Yorktown.
